Policy and Campaigns
INQUEST conducts campaigns, policy work and research on issues relating to deaths in custody. We aim to raise public awareness, improve the investigation processes following contentious deaths and increase accountability of state officials in order to prevent future avoidable deaths.
Through our casework over more than 30 years, INQUEST has gained a unique overview of how the inquest system operates from the perspective of bereaved families and their advisers. We identify policy issues arising from contentious deaths and their investigation and campaign with and on behalf of bereaved families for changes in practice to prevent future deaths.
In this section:
‘You have clearly made yourselves a force to be reckoned with, a powerful instrument for good. In the process you have not only achieved real change in an aspect of our common life which would have commanded little attention or esteem were it not for your efforts, but you have at the same time offered enormous support to those bereaved people who long for a clear verdict on the death in custody of someone who means a great deal to them.’
– Dr Peter Selby, President of the National Council for Independent Monitoring Boards
