Summer barbecue and quiz raises nearly £2,800 for INQUEST
29 July 2014
A barbecue and quiz organised by INQUEST Lawyers Group Steering Committee member Cyrilia Davies, from Birnberg Peirce solicitors, raised a wonderful £2,756.69 for INQUEST last week. Around 50 people attended the event at the Birchwood Centre in Warrington, where the Hillsborough inquests are currently taking place.
An awesome array of raffle prizes included free lunch for a week at the Birchwood Centre and free gym membership for a month at Birchwood gym (both donated by Birchwood Park Centre), a game of golf at True-Fit Golf Centre in Warrington (donated by True-Fit Golf Centre), two signed copies of Inquests: a practitioner’s guide (donated By Leslie Thomas QC and Adam Straw), an iPad mini (donated by Doughty Street Chambers), £250 in John Lewis vouchers (donated by 1 Gray’s Inn Square Chambers), four tickets for Liverpool v Arsenal in an executive box (donated by 4PB Chambers), and £250 in Selfridges vouchers (donated by those instructed from Garden Court Chambers). We cannot thank the donors enough for their generosity.
The winners of the quiz, ably compered by our own co-director Helen Shaw, were Broudie Jackson Canter solicitors, congratulations to them!
‘The decision to publish the Cass report is an extraordinary victory for INQUEST… Belatedly, it lifts another layer of camouflage from the secrets, lies and impunity that prevail in large sections of the British state and make such terrible events not merely possible but more likely…What INQUEST, Celia Stubbs and countless others around the world – say, the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Disappeared in Argentina – keep reminding us is not just that the instincts of the powerful are wrong, but that they can also be defeated, however long it may take.’
