The inquest into the death of 22 year old Tony Doherty at HMP Wormwood Scrubs opens on Monday 8 October at West London CoronerThe legal official who orders a post-mortem and who is in charge of the inquest procedure.’s Court.
Tony Doherty was found hanged in his cell in the segregation unit of Wormwood Scrubs prison on 3 December 2010. He had rung his cell bell several times prior to his death but it had been ignored by the prison officer on duty.
The family hopes the inquest will answer questions concerning the events leading up to Mr Doherty’s death, and whether a swifter response to his cries for help could have saved him.
Tony Doherty’s family is being represented by ILG members Clair Hilder of Hodge Jones & Allen, and Jonathan Glasson of Matrix Chambers.
‘The decision to publish the Cass report is an extraordinary victory for INQUEST… Belatedly, it lifts another layer of camouflage from the secrets, lies and impunity that prevail in large sections of the British state and make such terrible events not merely possible but more likely…What INQUEST, Celia Stubbs and countless others around the world – say, the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Disappeared in Argentina – keep reminding us is not just that the instincts of the powerful are wrong, but that they can also be defeated, however long it may take.’
