Get Help

We support bereaved families and friends after deaths involving the state, with clear information and practical guidance on next steps. We are independent of government and do not receive government funding.

We were set up by, and for, bereaved families and friends. If someone close to you has died in prison, in police custody, or in immigration or mental health detention, we may be able to help.

We are here to support you whatever the background and circumstances of the person who has died.

Connection and community

Whatever your situation, we hope these resources help you feel better informed and supported as you decide what to do next.

When we can help

We can help* you navigate the legal processes, explore options for legal representation and funding, and work with you to engage meaningfully in the inquest.

Get in touch now if your friend or family member died in:

  • prison (including Young Offender Institutions and Secure Training Centres)
  • police custody or following recent police contact
  • immigration detention
  • mental health settings as either a voluntary or detained inpatient
  • a state funded care setting and had a learning disability and/or autism.
* We are not able to advise on matters relating to medical malpractice. We suggest contacting Action against Medical Accidents.

Without the support of INQUEST I would not have been able to get through my case – I owe them so much.
