The inquest into the death of Marc Anthony Cole opened on 13 January 2020. Marc died after coming into contact with Devon and Cornwall Police on 23 May 2017, whilst in mental health crisis. Marc was described by his family as a devoted father of two, who had just turned 30.
After caring for his terminally ill father, Marc experienced a period of mental ill health. On the 23 May 2017, Marc attended a friend’s residence at Langton road, Falmouth. Marc sadly experienced a period of distress and self-harm, during which he required urgent help. Devon and Cornwall Police attended the scene. Marc was then Tasered three times and subject to baton and restraint, following which he suffered cardiac arrest and died.
The family hope that the ongoing inquest will explore:
- The use of force against Marc during his period of distress.
- The safeguarding and special measures taken to ensure the safety of Marc being a vulnerable person.
- The emergency response.
