Wayne Moore collapsed in HMP Nottingham and was pronounced dead in hospital on 16 December 2013, after complaints of stomach pains were ignored by Prison Officers. His death is believed to have been caused by a perforated duodenal ulcer (in the small intestine). He was 46 years old. The inquest into Wayne’s death opens on Friday 23 November.
Wayne had been unwell and vomiting blood since his arrest by Derby police the week prior on 8 December. He had been remanded to HMP Nottingham on 13 December after being taken to Derby hospital, where he was prescribed medicine for stomach inflammation and a large ulcer. He never received the prescription.
Wayne was extremely distressed in prison, reporting worsening pain to prison staff over the weekend he was there. He was taken to QMC hospital in Nottingham on 14 December after he was found collapsed in his cell. He was discharged back to prison later the same day and placed under suicide and self-harm monitoring procedures (ACCT) for the remainder of his time in prison. On the night before his death Wayne set fire to his cell. He was moved to another cell where he repeatedly pressed his cell bell asking for medication.
On the morning of his death, he continued to report feeling unwell as prison staff prepared him for his court attendance, dressing him and putting him into in an escort vehicle to go to court. Escort staff raised the alarm about Wayne’s condition, calling a nurse to examine him. He collapsed in the van and was taken by paramedics to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The inquest will explore the healthcare management of Wayne from his arrest until his death, in particular:
- Wayne’s condition at time of detention in Derby police custody;
- Care and treatment at Derby Hospital, whilst he was in police custody;
- Reception into the prison on 13 December including assessment of health and the nature of ongoing treatment provided;
- Why the medication which was prescribed to him in hospital was not provided by the prison;
- Wayne’s attendance and treatment at QMC Hospital on 14 December 2013; and
- Post-discharge communication between hospital and prison healthcare, if any;
- Care and treatment at the prison from 14 to 16 December.
